Was it last year (?) that Sheldon had a run of good races and a lot of people talked about him dethroning Schatz. Deja Vu all over again?

Just a great comparison.  Sheldon had 3 wins at this time last year, 5 for the year.  Sweet has 9 wins now.  Yeah, great comparison.

Lol, awful comparison.

Sweet is the defending Knoxville Nationals champion among other accomplishments Sheldon hasn’t come anywhere near.

Sweet's been 1 of the top outlaws for a couple years now? Where have you been?

If I recall correctly, most of the talk last year about Sheldon started after the 17 won an All Star race at Bubba, someone said that was where he belonged. Not with the Outlaws and he was just like dad, tore up equipment, I think over-rating was a term used, etc. Well then he won 2 outlaws races quickly, was the early point leader and in response to the original poster people got a little excited. Some said some day he might dethrone Schatz and could be the future of the Outlaws. I think he has a bright future.

Sweet on the other hand has won big races, been consistent, and been a top driver for basically 5 years. This is the first time he has had a point lead at this point but I don't see him flamming out. Past 4 races you have bad finish after mechanical failure, responded with a win, wreck on lap 1, responded with a 6th place run, and a 3rd. I don't see him dropping out of the top 5 in points by end of year

Just an observation, I guess. A lot of the comments about Sweet right now sound just like a lot of the comments about Haudenschild back then.

I can remember when folks were always talking about some kid from ND and whether he had what it took to dethrone Steve Kinser. I guess that worked out ok for him.

Not trying to say this with a lot negativity, even though I know it will come off that way, but It's just not a good observation.

Sweet has been consistently outrunning Donny this year and is far more accomplished than Sheldon was when people were talking last year. Not to mention he's been on tour for half a dozen years now, so he's far more familiar with the grind and I'd imagine he has a pretty dang good idea of what it takes to win a title. Also, he has won big races - based on his showings last year and in June, it'd be hard to say he's not the favorite at Knoxville.

There's very little similarity between people talking about Sheldon last year and Sweet this year. Sorry.

I can agree that the comparison in accomplishments is not in the same ballpark. The similarity in how some people were/are talking about the two drivers on here is similar. I'd have to say that I didn't remember that Sheldon was still out there until I saw a mention of him in one of the WoO recap videos.

ps. I'm picking Logan Schuchart to win the Nationals this year, Sweet to win the WoO points title.

1.  I remember a lot of people being impressed with Sheldon last year.  I do not remember anyone saying he was going to dethrone Schatz.  (I could be wrong......)

2.  You do realize Schatz has not won every Outlaw title and Nationals over the last 15 years, right?  He has been beaten before.  So, if the 49 car wins the title this year, and another Nationals, he is not the first and it doesn't mean Schatz is finished.

I Hear what you're saying. Maybe the bigger question would be is Kraig Kinser, Tim Schaeffer, Jason Johnson, Jason Meyers or Daryn Pittman the next Donny Schatz? :0

On the bright side, no one is displaying 'Anybody but Schatz' signs like they used to do with Kinser.

Sheldon is young. Will he ever win the title, we will see. Right now he has to get consistent and bring the car back in 1 pc. which he hasn't been able to do this year. Sure a lot of mechanical issues, also a lot of him going in to hot.
