BRENT SEXTON 3RD AT BARONA - HEARTBREAK FOR SON GRANT!

(Lakeside, CA, May 24, 2019) Family patriarch Brent Sexton produced a season-best third place result last Saturday night when the POWRi California Lightning Sprint Car Series visited Sexton/Gatlin Racing’s home track, the Barona Speedway.  However, that finish was overshadowed by the impressive performance turned in by his youngest son, Grant, who nearly scored a win in the 25-lap main event.

Joining the family team for the race that is located near their Lakeside, California home, was veteran driver David Bezio of San Diego.  A former winner in the CLS series, it was Bezio’s first race with the group in several years.

Twenty cars showed up for the CLS second appearance of the 2019 campaign at the San Diego County dirt oval.  As what is starting to be a regular occurrence, all three Sexton family members qualified in the top 10.  Dalton, 16, timed in fourth fastest with a lap of 14.362.  Grant, 14, was seventh quickest in the field when he stopped the clock at 14.438.  Brent was 10th quick when he toured the oval with a time of 14.515.  Bezio was one spot behind Brent in qualifying when he recorded a 14.911.

Bezio proved that winning is still part of his racing repertoire when he won the second eight-lap heat race.  The first heat matched the Sexton siblings with Grant placing second and Dalton fourth.  In the third and final heat, Brent placed second.

For the main event, Grant had the best starting spot on the team as he was coming from the outside of the front row.  Dalton started directly behind in row two.  Brent lined up on the inside of the fifth pairing with Bezio right behind him on the inside of row six.

Once the race began, Grant occupied the second-place spot with Dalton taking up fifth.  Grant slipped back to third on lap four and eventually was back to fourth on lap 11.  From that point on, what he did caught the attention of everyone in the place.

Grant was back into third within a lap, but he was a half straight behind the two first-place cars.  The teenager quickly chopped their lead down.  Getting into heavy lapped traffic, he raced back into second.  Impressively, in taking second and third back, he overtook two drivers who are seldom passed in main events and he did it within two laps!

Grant continued his forward progress and quickly tracked down the leader.  Then, as they sped through the lappers, he took the lead!  Once out front, he simply drove away and built a near full straightaway advantage.  The win was his for the taking and the regular CLS fans were cheering him on.

Unfortunately, the 2018 CLS Rookie of the Year slid sideways in turn three on the 22nd lap and came to a stop.  The second-place car clipped him and brother Dalton slid to a stop as well.  The certain win was gone in the blink of an eye, but the performance is one that will be remembered for a long time as the kid blew by some of the top cars in the club.

Grant and Dalton were able to restart at the back.  The same with Bezio, who stopped to avoid the tangle.  When the race ended four laps later, Brent had the best finish of the four-car team and his best finish of the year with a third.  Bezio came home 11th, Dalton was 12th and Grant took 14th.

After six rounds of the 2019 CLS series, Dalton sits ninth in the championship standings.  Grant is 12th.  After a tough start through the first three races of the year, Brent has moved all the way up to 15th.

Sexton/Gatlin racing gets this week off before returning to CLS action on Saturday, June 1st at the Ventura Raceway.
