CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINT CAR SERIES CLOSES SEASON SATURDAY!
(Torrance, CA, November 12, 2019) The USAC California Lightning Sprint Car Series will close it’s 25th Anniversary campaign this Saturday night, November 17th, with the running of the “2nd Annual Western States Lightning Sprint Car Championship” at the Bakersfield Speedway. Saturday’s main event will pay $1,000.00 to win and $150.00 to start. The CLS will be joined by the USAC National and Western Midgets and Mini Stocks. Spectator gates will open at 4:00 P.M. and racing will begin at 6:00.
The fight for the overall CLS championship ended at the Ventura Raceway on October 27th when Jarrett Kramer of Spring Valley sewed up his second CLS crown. In addition, Kramer also won the USAC Lightning Sprint National Championship. Camarillo’s Cody Nigh has a firm grip on the second spot in the CLS standings, but there are other battles in the top-10 that will be decided at Bakersfield.
Bobby Michnowicz, the five-time CLS champion from Lomita, won the Ventura main event and took over third in the championship standings. However, he is only six points ahead of two-time series champion Brent Sexton of Lakeside. Behind them, Gardena’s Dominic Del Monte seems destined to finish fifth.
The tightest battle in the top-10 is for sixth and it involves a couple of teenage drivers. Palmdale’s Eric Greco currently holds the spot, but he is a mere two-markers ahead of Lakewood’s Aiden Lange. The other position in the top-10 that could still change hands is eighth. Pat Kelley of Chino is only 13-points ahead of 14-year-old Grant Sexton of Lakeside. Sexton has already sewed up the CLS “Rookie of the Year” award.
After the season opener was rained out at Bakersfield on March 17th, the CLS has made three appearances at the 1/3 of a mile banked clay oval. Lange won the first one on April 21st. Bruce Douglass of Ventura, who was 66-years-old at the time, showed everyone the fast way around the track when he posted the victory on June 16th. San Diego’s A.J. Bender, a regular in the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series, won the last race at the Kern County oval on September 8th.
In addition to the regulars from the CLS, a contingent of cars will be coming from Northern California and Jesse Fernandez will be heading west from Colorado to compete this week.
Fans wishing to attend Saturday’s race can find the Bakersfield Speedway at 5001 N. Chester Ext. in Bakersfield (93308). The track phone number is (661) 393-3373 and the website is available at http://www.bakersfieldspeedway.com/
