SEXTON/GATLIN RACING RESULTS FROM BAKERSFIELD SPEEDWAY – BUSY JULY COMING UP!

(Lakeside, CA, June 26, 2018) Sexton/Gatlin Racing got back in action on June 16th when Brent Sexton and his two sons, Grant and Dalton, contested round #1 of the “Civil War Series” at the Bakersfield Speedway.

The race was the first of four in the “Civil War Series,” which matches So Cal’s California Lightning Sprint Cars vs Northern California’s Bay Cities Racing Association.  While the Sexton’s will miss the next round when they contest the prestigious “Dirt Cup” in Deming, Washington in July, they will battle in the final two rounds of the series at the Placerville Speedway in September.

Unseasonable cold temperatures greeted the teams at the mid-June race  instead of the usual blast furnace conditions at the Kern County dirt track.  In addition, persistent blustery winds turned the track into a virtual tire eating monster.

Grant, the youngest of the racing trio, was the best of the family when he timed in fifth fastest in the 29-car field with a lap of 13.819.  Older brother Dalton was 16th quick at 14.155.  Patriarch Brent had car issues and did not get in any qualifying laps.

Heat racing saw Grant on the track first when he finished fourth in the first heat.  The fourth and final heat matched Dalton against his dad and the teen not only beat his dad, but he beat everybody else in the race to post the win.  Brent finished three spots behind in fourth.

With the thermometer doing a nose dive and the night running late, track officials cut the CLS main from 30 to 20 laps.  Buffered by the constant winds, the track was going to be a tricky one that was going to be tough to pass on.  For the shortened affair, Grant had the best starting spot for the Sexton/Gatlin threesome coming from third.  Dalton started 10th and Brent, who came into the night ranked second in the championship standings, had to start on the outside of the eighth row in 16th.

Starting up front with the “Big Dog’s” did not faze Grant at all.  He stayed in the top three over the first four laps and was running fourth when a giant tangle that included nearly one-third of the field happened in turn four.  Unfortunately, one of the cars caught up in the melee was Dalton’s #18 and he was done for the night with a frustrating 21st place finish.

After another brief yellow flag, the race went its final 12-laps green to checkers.  Grant maintained a strong fourth until the 14th lap when the tire eating track surface affected his car.  When the race ended six laps later, he went under the checkered flag in 12th and with not a lot left of his right rear tire.  Brent’s night, which started on a down note with the issues that prevented him from qualifying, finished on a high note.  He picked off 10-cars and finished sixth in the main event.

Brent maintained his second-place spot in the championship standings.  Grant and Dalton flip flopped in the “Rookie of the Year” chase with Grant taking the lead spot back from his older brother.  However, his advantage is a scant 16-points with more than half of the season still to go.

July will be a busy month for the Sexton/Gatlin Racing Team.  On the 7th, it heads to the Ventura Raceway before journeying to Everson Speedway in Denning, Washington for the 35th Annual Dirt Cup on 19th, 20th and 21st.
