Just curious who you think could compete well in the WoO circuit if they were given the chance? Of all of those who either dont because of finaces or local commitment or family or whatever else it is that keeps them from touring. Just based on skill and experience who would have the most success if they joined?

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

Initially nobody. Regarless the circumstance I think the grueling nature of the tour would overwhelm any new team for a minimum of the first year, and probably even beyond that.  Different tracks night after night, different soils, different atmospheres, the requirements needed to meet all those challenges is the one part of the WoO tour that can't be bought. I do however think there are several drivers that given all the best equipment and a knowledgeable crew chief could compete pretty consistantly by a third year on tour. I know all about those who point to Larson, but sorry, a hit and miss schedule doesn't at all speak of what it takes to travel the entire circuit. Those who would hand Larson Schatz's title are drastically mistaken. Same as those that thought it might be handed to Gravel this year. Ain't gonna happen, forbidding injury of course, and even then, I for one don't believe Gravel is the successor. Not yet anyway.

Kerry Madsen and Brian Brown.  Both have great financial backing in their current situations plus Brown has traveled a lot, while Madsen toured for a few years.

Aaron Reutzel. The dude is a factor no matter where he shows up.

I agree. Ever since he seemingly showed up out of nowhere (to me at least) at Cocopah a few years ago, he has only been on the rise. He always seems to be near the top during time trials, and is constantly running hard.

Last year Madsen for sure would have been a close to 10 win season and probably 4th or 5th in points. He was by far the strongest non-woo guy all year.

Brown would probably contend for a bunch of wins and run around 6th-7th in points, he makes too many mistakes to contend with Schatz, Sweet, Gravel etc...

I think Reutzel would be like Cory Eliason. Eliason is really fast some nights, and then runs 11-15th other nights. He’s run all but 2 WoO races, so he’s basically a regular.

Kyle Larson would probably contend for the championship, and it’s sad we’ll likely never have a year where Kyle and Schatz are in their primes battling for the WoO championship even if you believe that Larson will eventually retire from Cup to race sprint cars.

I get what you're saying blazer.  However, I do disagree on the Larson view.  If there are two drivers in the country that could decide they wanted to run the full WoO schedule next year and make a HUGE impact, I believe it's Larson and Bell.  Both have the talent, would have the equipment and recources, AND, I feel, would have no problems adapting to the schedule.  Larson isn't running a hit and miss schedule---he's running as many races as he can when he gets time off from a job that takes 36 of his 52 weeks.  Those 36 "races" are 3 days full of activities very similar to those of 3 days of racing an Outlaw event--minus the overnight travel to the next track.

I honestly believe Larson would feel like he's on vacation running the outlaw schedule vs. what he is doing right now.

But, that's just my opinion.  Not saying you're wrong.

I think this list is short and are we considering running top 10 in points, doing well? To crack the current top ten would be extremely tough. Maybe after a few years on the road, some could but again, I think it's less than 5. Kerry, Bell, Larson, maybe DeWease. Look at Ian Madsen, who I consider a very good driver, currently running 9th in points.

Just to further the Eliason point, hes been to 27 of the 29 races so far and sitting 13th in points. Even if you give him the maximum amount of points for the 2 races he missed, he’d only be 9th. It’s very tough to crack the top 8 now that Logan is more consistently fast.

Given the time, Tasker ond or Sawyer Phillips would be competetive on the WoO tour.

C'mon paintboss, Tasker is a gasser but makes to many mistakes to compete at Knoxville. Sawyer is improving but to even think he could compete with the Outlaws is crazy. Doing the tour and being able to compete are 2 way different things! Ask Knipp. Ian has great stuff and is a good driver but he is still an improving racer. If you look at the races he has won at Knoxville over the years, he never had to pass anyone. Start up front and win. Start midpack and didn't really go any where. Even Brown makes to many mistakes on the road but is dominate at Knoxville. Top outlaw guys are on another level.

I'm.an older guy so I'll advocate for the experience and recommend some of the former Outlaws who have dropped off and settled down for one reason or another.  The NASCAR obsession with youth seems to have infiltrated the sport and the old dogs can still get it done.

As far as just driving ability and not necessarily taking their current team/car.

Brian Brown, Kerry Madsen, Aaron Reutzel, Carson Macedo, Danny Dietrich, Greg Hodnett, Cory Eliason, Parker Price-Miller, Joey Saldana, Cole Duncan, Lucas Wolfe, Rico Abreu to name a few.

Not to say they would be top 5 in points but as far as competitive I would say most of these guys would be able to make each feature and battle for top 5 and top 10 finishes. Not too many would be able to touch Schatz except may Laron and possibly Bell. Some have more upside to others but in no particular order if I were to start a team, this would be the list I would probably start with.

Mine is just an opinion too, of course. As long as nobody confuses what Larson is doing on the All Star series during Speedweeks with what he might do on the WoO series we should be fine. WoO is a totally different animal. As far as feeling like he was on vacation running the full tour vs what he does now, I can't quite buy in to that. I gotta believe for the most part he flies in and flies out for his dirt events at this point in his career. He probably has very little doubt where his next shower and change of clothes is coming from. His is a pampered life compared to a full time traveller on the tour. And the toughest part of his full time job now is probably his sponsorship responsibilities. Oh, all those terrible luncheons and forced smiles for the cameras......gotta be terrible Smile

I will add to my opinion that I believe there are more drivers available with the skills neccessary than there are crew chiefs that can meet the challenge.

Can't believe no one has said Tim shaffer. I think he would have done well had he stayed on. Obviously K Madsen. Bell  and Ruetzel maybe. I feel Larson would be very inconsistent on the full tour. Blazer00 is right if you think it's just the drivers are the only factors in a teams success you are highly mistaken. The crew chief and the  members play a HUGE part of a teams success. When you say Donnie schatz, David Gravel, Brad Sweet for example, you are really saying The TSR racing team, CJB racing team, KKR racing team......

You should sign up for the challenge. You seem to know more than anyone else in the sport!!
