Van Dyke Motorsports and driver Buddy Kofoid set sights on annual Silver Cup this weekend in Chico
By Gary Thomas
Chico, CA – February 26, 2018…After getting the season underway this past weekend Van Dyke Motorsports and new driver Michael “Buddy” Kofoid will now turn their attention towards this weekend’s annual Silver Cup Race of Champions at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico.
Kofoid made his second career start in the Van Dyke Motorsports No. 5H last Saturday at the Sherm and Loree Toller Memorial in Marysville. After clocking the fifth fastest lap in qualifying he brought home a runner up finish in his heat race and then drew the five pill for the 30-lap feature. The 16-year-old battled among the top-five early on, before contact sent him into the wall, resulting in a broken Jacobs ladder and shock. He then exited the track on lap eight and was officially scored 18th.
“We had a great start to the night at Marysville Raceway, but unfortunately some bad luck in the main event put a premature end to our run,” Kofoid said. “I can’t thank Harley Van Dyke, Gary Silva and all our partners enough for the opportunity this year. I’m excited to get back in the seat this weekend at the Silver Cup in Chico.”
Kofoid and Van Dyke Motorsports will open the annual Silver Cup this Friday night barring any weather issues. The event then concludes the following evening with a $3,500-to-win main event. Last season Kofoid claimed finishes of ninth and tenth respectively during the double header weekend.
The Penngrove, CA driver’s biggest moment at the track last year however, occurred when he claimed victory in the annual Wednesday night Civil War event at the 64th Gold Cup Race of Champions. He also became the youngest winner in Silver Dollar Speedway Sprint Car history earlier in the season during a Friday night event in July.
“It was pretty special to win the Gold Cup opener last year,” commented Kofoid. “I love racing at Silver Dollar Speedway and to get a pair of wins at the track last season was something I’ll never forget. Hopefully everything will fall our way this weekend and we can do it again.”
Car owner Harley Van Dyke also tasted victory at the Silver Dollar Speedway just a couple seasons ago on opening night of the prestigious Fall Nationals with Dominic Scelzi and at the annual Fair Race with Cory Eliason behind the wheel. Kofoid will now look to add another this Friday and Saturday at the Silver Cup.
The front gate will open at 5pm each night, with qualifying around 6pm and racing expected to get underway around 7. Pre-sale tickets are available at https://events.admitoneproducts.com/tkt_sales.php?test=true&event_id=206918&sales
The Silver Dollar Speedway is located on the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds, a half-mile west of SR 99 on Park Ave in Chico, California. For more information visit www.silverdollarspeedway.com
