NEW USAC/CRA POINT LEADER BRODY ROA READY FOR CALIFORNIA SPRINT WEEK!
(Buena Park, CA, August 31, 2017) When California Sprint Week kicks off on Saturday night at Calistoga Speedway, the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series will have a brand-new point. Garden Grove, California 26-year-old Brody Roa heads into the grueling six race series with an 18-point lead over the second-place driver in the championship standings.
Roa seized the point lead last Saturday on a sizzling hot night at Perris Auto Speedway. The evening seemed to be going flawlessly for the B.R. Motorsports team. Coming into the night Roa was in second place in the championship standings and only trailed the leader by one-point. He flipped that around in qualifying when he posted the second fastest in the 22-car field. That gave him a one-point lead. However, his lead was short lived as a third-place finish in his 10-lap heat race saw the tall racer slip back into second heading into the main event on the fast-half-mile clay oval.
The night, which was moving along nicely for the #91R team, suddenly shifted to high drama when they pushed off for the main. Roa had a great starting spot for the race as he was inside the third row. However, moments after bumping off, he felt something in the power steering and pulled into the work area to have the team check it out. The stop meant that instead of starting inside the third row in fifth, Roa, he would have to start in the back row.
“We lost a line on the power steering system and it dumped all of the power steering fluid out of it,” Roa told Dave Stall on the Racer Radio Show on Sunday. “When I pushed off it felt wrong and had about half of the power steering. I pulled in and the crew topped off the reservoir and it lasted about three laps before it dumped the rest of it (the fluid) out. I ran the rest of the race with no power steering.”
For regulars in the crowd, it was obvious that something was up as the veteran racer hugged the pole all race and was much slower than normal. However, through determination, a fatigued Roa drove the car all the way back for a seventh-place finish and his lofty position at the top of the standings.
“I putted around the bottom just trying to make the best of it and everything kind of fell into place and made it an okay night for us,” Roa told Stall. “It was a weird night. Everybody else kind of used their stuff up too and it kind of worked out in our favor.”
Earlier in the night, between qualifying and the heat races, Roa pocketed and extra $1,000.00 by winning the “Junior Kurtz Trophy Dash.” Matching the top four qualifiers of the night in a set of four, three lap races, Roa was the top point scorer for the unique dash.
California Sprint Week will consist of six nights of racing on five different tracks jammed into eight evenings. The grind will start this Saturday and Sunday, September 2nd and 3rd, at the beautiful half-mile Calistoga Speedway in the Wine Country. On Labor Day, Monday the 4th, action will continue at the 3/8 of a mile Petaluma Speedway. Tuesday the 5th and Wednesday the 6th will be off days before returning to the ¼ mile Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico on the 7th. Friday the 8th will see the tour visit the ¼ mile Ocean Speedway on the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. The mini-series will finally wind up at Hanford’s 3/8 of a mile Keller Auto Speedway on Saturday, September 9th.
