Knoxville put a video up this afternoon of an interview with Doug Clark. In the video he mentioned his first time flagging at Knoxville was in a mystery race. What exactly where these races and when did they occur?

They were always held on Friday night of the Nationals. The mystery was always who was gonna be in it. They were never very well received. They also had The Race of the States where they would try to get a representative from as many states as possible.

Do you or anyone else recall how those state races were? That seems like a cool idea. If it had a full field.
Thanks in advance

In the beginning the Race of States and the Mystery Feature were both well recieved and anticipated by the fans. There were even T-shirts printed. The reason for them was simple. It was the only way to get the big name racers on the track for Friday night, which was and is the non-qualifiers night. Kinser, Sammy, Wolfgang and other big names.....pretty much every year were in one or the other or both races racing for the extra purse. The problem with those races bagan when the Saturday night feature started to pay the big money...$25,000.00 then $30,000.00 etc..... The drivers in contention would no longer risk equipment and run those races. Why risk the chance at big bucks for a $5,000.00 winners share, or much less than that for not winning? Understandable. That's when Knoxville came up with the A, B and C scrambles. It was added entertainment for the fans, plus was a way to get the big boys out on Friday night which was also for the fans. Knoxville has always strived to make all four nights of the Nationals equally good entertinment. Each time there has been something to lessen the Friday night entertainment value for the fans, Knoxville has found a way to make Friday night exciting all over again.
