It is being reported by Jeremy Elliot that the Stenhouse/Woods 17 is not at Joliet tonight.  The World of Outlaws reported that the team is taking a medical exemption.  Can someone please explain to me how that works exactly??  Who is hurt?  Swank, Stenhouse, Woods???  I thought a medical exemption was for a full time driver???  Can someone explain this one to me??

This is out of the rulebook, I dont see how this could apply in this situation..

2.4 Medical and Unforeseen-Circumstance Exemption A.) Any Platinum or Gold Member Driver that is injured in a World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Cars Series event and unable to compete as a result, that team will be granted a medical exemption. The driver may be required at the discretion of the World Racing Group Officials to produce medical documentation. a. In the event of driver medical exemption the team has a 6-race (or 14-day) grace period, whichever occurs first, to field a replacement driver. If a replacement driver is not named within the specified time period, the team could forfeit their benefits to include but not limited to owner’s points, year-end awards and/or the provisional starting positions for the next season. b. The medical exemption will ensure that the team will be awarded Owner’s points, year-end awards and/or the provisional starting positions for the next season. The status of the team will also remain. c. Platinum or Gold Member Drivers will receive 90 (show-up) points per each event until the driver is able to resume his/her driving duties. d. Platinum or Gold Member Owners will receive 90 (show-up) points per each event that the team/driver is absent over the course of the specified time as stated in Sub-Section 2.4.A.a. e. The medical exemption period may be extended due to extenuating circumstances. Medical documentation must be submitted to and approved by World Racing Group and/or World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Officials prior to any granted extension of any medical exemption. B.) Any Platinum or Gold Member Driver and/or Team unable to attend an event because of any unforeseen circumstance, as determined by WoO Officials, may receive 50 points per race. The grace period allotted for this circumstance is 6-races or 14-days, whichever occurs first. Benefits may cease after this time period. During the grace period any involved driver or team participating in a non-sanctioned event will immediately lose all Benefits. C.) As determined by WoO Officials, 90 points may be awarded to any Platinum or Gold Driver or Team in good standing that is physically present at an event but is unable to compete. The grace period allotted for this circumstance is 6-races or 14-days, whichever occurs first. Benefits may cease after this time period. During the grace period any involved driver or team participating in a non-sanctioned event will immediately lose all Benefits

Unless they are gonna use Jac's Broken nose he's recovering from as a loophole I don't see any applcation of the above rule.

What's BS?  Are you sad over this situation.  Have you been wronged?

Anyone who says concussions aren't a serious condition should go fuck themselves.

because it seems to me the SWR is using Jac's injury as a scapegoat.  He was only slated to drive for them through the weekend.  Huge fan of Jac, but not of SWR.  Medical exemption for a temporary fill-in driver?

Hey there taking advantage of the rules. Anybody will do that and how do you blame them ?  If Jac suffered a concussion then he is smart enough to park it.  If they are going to put someone else in the seat then this benefits the team also. Just a rule for the teams that stay loyal to the series.

Jac is one of the toughest men to ever walk the face of the Earth. If he doesn't race, it's because he can't race. He's raced through and won with injuries countless times though his legendary career.

Wonder if you all have thought about this one ...Dennis Roth is still on the car and just might be calling more of what is going on then you think !!!!!!  Jac is out with a Concussion, so they took  the road they had to take  usuing a medical exemption .. I would say that Jac might be in the car for awhile  Roth is a fan of his and probably said to put him in the car !!!!

I don't get it.... why do they even need an exemption? Can't they put any driver they want in their car?

I think that no doubt Dennis is involved in the discussions but I think you may be overplaying his influence a tad.  We're not sure exactly how much Dennis is a part of the ownership group (does he own a certian % of the team) or if he's supplying engines and sponsorship only (and doesn't "own" a % of the team).  Either way he vastly important to the team and the decision making process but at the end of the day it's "Stenhouse - Wood Racing" not "Stenhouse - Wood - Roth Racing."  And if you know Dennis you know if he's intricately involved in an equal partnership/ownership his name is gonna damn well be included in the official company/ownership name.  All that said, we know from articles or can deduce that he provided their engine package (I believe I remember it being 3 engines) so that's $150,000+ plus any additional sponsorship funds.  That's HUGE for any team.  But he's also not paying the day to day bills (salaries, gas, insurance, etc. etc. etc.) nor is he paying for the other components of the car.  Yes, his "sponsorship" of engines + any additional sponsorship funds are making it easier for the team to pay those things, but he's not directly putting pen to paper for those expenditures.

All I'm saying is yes Dennis obviously has a say in things, but my guess is he's not the final decision maker.  He may say, you better hire "x, y, z" driver or I'm taking my engines and sponsorship and then Ricky and Matt have a decision to make (listen to Dennis or buy your own engines).  It's a tough situation.  I think Dennis will give his advise, his opinion, etc. but let Ricky and team make the final decision.  If it's something he doesn't like he probably lets the year play out and then pulls his sponsorship for next year.

Maybe they'll give Jac a few weeks, see how many cars he tears up and then move on...that's a joke, but seriously Jac is hard on equipment and engines.

I get to sit in the stands for 4 hours and watch the races.  I go home and have no financial responsibilities at all related to racing.

So, should I or anyone else on this forum really give 2 $hits about what rule the #17 team is taking advantage of?  The former driver, nor the current driver is in contention for the points championship.   The team is actively searching for a full-time replacement for the remainder of the season and for 2018.  Why does it bother anyone how they are attempting to patch the season and pay the bills?  If Jac has a concussion (which he likely does if they are reporting it) ,  I hope he is better soon.  If he doesn't, (which I feel is unlikely) who the hell cares????

All I'm worried about is I wanted to go see the Joliet race last night but got caught in jury duty!!!

Oh man, jury duty, that stinks.  Sounds like it was a good night of racing.  And you're right.  Not sure why some are so up in arms about this rule.  And doing even a cursory amount of research shows Jac went to ER Saturday.  And you're right they're not in contention so they can proceed how they see fit, whether that be hire a replacement for the rest of this year, find a permanent driver, etc.  They want to finish out the WoO year and continue forward as a team.  That's a good thing for the sport - another team (especially a "new one" on the WoO tour) means a driver fills a new seat on the WoO tour, crew gets hired, etc.  Not many new teams are being formed and running a major sanctioning body.  Good thing for the sport.

Sort of related but concussions are no joke with what we now know medically about them.  Didn't Donny Kreitz retire because of concussion related issues/symptoms.
