PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY ANNOUNCES NEW RULES REGARDING RED AND YELLOW FLAGS!

(Perris, CA, April 1, 2017) Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian has announced new rules regarding yellow and red flags at the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval.  Beginning in May, drivers who cause or who are involved in a yellow or a red flag will be put at the front of the field for the restart.

Traditionally, drivers who have been involved in a yellow or a red flag due to a crash, spin out or stop, have been penalized and had to restart at the back.  Kazarian’s new rule is set to revolutionize the sport.

“I was laying in bed the other night unable to sleep and then it hit me,” said the promoter of the track which is now in it’s 22nd season of operation.  “As the rule stands now, when drivers cause or are involved in a yellow or red flag, they are sent to the back of the pack if they are able to restart.  99.9% of the time, that means they have no chance to win.  Now when someone crashes, or causes a yellow or red, no matter what position they were running in at the time, we are putting them at the front so they have a chance of winning.”

“Look at Rickie Gaunt when he was racing,” Kazarian continued.  “He would stop on the track two or three times a night and every time he would have to restart at the back.  That was not fair!  If Rickie was racing under our new rules, people would have a hard time telling him and Damion Gardner apart.  Well, they would have a hard time until Rickie got out of the car.”

Kazarian also announced another new rule regarding the work area during a race.  When a car is in a tangle and must be pushed, or towed back to the work area, officials are not going to give the car any time to get repaired.  However, once it is repaired, the yellow flag will come out and the damaged car will be placed at the front of the field for the restart.  All the laps it was down will be wiped out and the car will be the new leader.  The same applies to cars that pull to the work area due to mechanical ills under green flag conditions.  As soon as the crew makes repairs, the yellow will come out and that car will be placed in the lead.

“Just like stopping on the track, as it stands now, when a car goes to the work area, it must restart at the back and has little chance of winning,” Kazarian said.  “What we are trying to do is level the playing field so everyone who starts the main event will have a chance of winning.  We have some guys who have been racing forever who have never won a main event because they crash every race.  Now, they can crash to their hearts desire and they may end up winning because of it.  Imagine the excitement for them if they would pull into victory lane.”

When queried as to whether he thought the new rules would have 20 cars parked in the work area or have the 21 cars simultaneously spin behind the leader on the last lap, Kazarian answered.

“Absolutely not!  Look, I have been around racing my entire life and all drivers want to win, but they are good honest men and women.  I have never heard of drivers or their crews cheating.  Never!  They would never cheat.  This is not the NFL and there are no deflated footballs in racing like they have up in Massachusetts.”

Another question that came up during his announcement was increased fighting due to the possibility of more crashes.  Drivers and crews could become embroiled and would slug it out due to some of the tangles.

“Wow, I never even thought of that,” Kazarian said with a grin.  “Lots of fans would love to see fights like in hockey.  Just look at how excited hockey fans get when players drop their sticks and gloves.  However, we must take into consideration that fighting can be dangerous.  So, if drivers or crews get involved in a fight in the pit area where the fans cannot see them, they will face disciplinary action that could include fines and suspensions.  But, if they fight on the track, the participants will start on the pole at the next race and will receive free pit passes.”

Tony Jones, the 2007 USAC/CRA Champion and 2000 Oval Nationals champion, was ecstatic when he was informed of the new rules and has thus announced that he is coming out of retirement.

“Man, you have to give it to Don Kazarian,” Jones enthused over the phone on Friday.  “This is genius.  I am coming out retirement for sure this time.  When you think about it, with all the equipment I wrecked and all the times I crashed when I was racing before, if they had this rule at the time, I would have had won more championships than Steve Kinser.  I am excited.  I am telling the crew to put some extra padding on the cage, because I am going to be restarting up front all the time.  And, I will fight all night long for free pit passes.”

In racing, the thoughts of Indy occupy the minds of many when the month of May rolls around.  This year those around So Cal, they may be thinking more about crashin’, spinnin,’ and fightin.’

As he wrapped up talking about his new, exciting idea that is going to revolutionize racing, Kazarian said with a wink and a smile, “Tell everyone to have a Happy April Fool’s Day.”
