I have been to both tracks several times. Volusia is definietly faster. Last yr in the feature the lap times were decreasing instead of increasing. Eldora has seem to lost its luster. In the 80's and 90's Eldora was it, but ever since they took the banking out its like watching a NASCAR race. Volusia is wicked fast.. Go stand in turn 3 or 4 in the infield and it will definietly raise the hair on the back of your neck, Priceless. What does everyone think about this topic. I still like Eldora, I have seen many great races there. Just saying.

I've been to Eldora and it's damn fast. I've never been to Volusia so I can't make an accurate comparison but I do agree that Eldora was far better before they decided to groom it for the stupid NASCAR trucks and take some of the banking out. I really wish they'd put it back the way it was. I don't understand why they can't just grade the banking out if it for the truck race and then put it back the way it was afterwards. Admittedly, I don't know how difficult that is to do but I always assumed with the proper equipment (which Tony certainly has) that it wouldn't be a huge deal. Maybe I'm wrong though?

Eldora was traditionally 18 degrees(low in the turns) to 24 degrees(high in the turns). This is known to some as variable banking. Tony changed it to 20 degrees from bottom to top for a few years after he purchased the track. However, the last time that I was there (October 2015) it appeared to me that they had added some banking back to the top of the turns like it used to be. Of course, that is only casual observation, and I admit that I could be completely wrong.

Or was it the snail race ticket sales for the trucks that convinced him?

Lincoln 1845 ft/.35 mile T1=118MPH
Eldora 2287 ft/.43mile T3=135MPH
Port 2716 ft/.51 mile T3=TBD
Grove 2792 ft/.53 mile T3=135MPH

Whatever it was it's crappy he ruined Eldora for napcar....,. Isn't tony always saying he loves dirt and always will and acted like his whole career that it's all about dirt for him but then he ruins a historic place for dirt racing for a buck that he didn't even need mind you.

we always will have the memories of yesteryear and how sick ass fast the big E was

Tony read this and fix it back the way it was and leave trucks for pushing real race cars off to race not racing push trucks man

I wouldn't exactly question Tony's love for dirt track racing. He's invested more money in our sport than anyone has. Owns a track, team and a series so I wouldn't go there but I do agree. I completely understand the truck race has become a big deal and all but I just wish they'd groom the track for those guys then fix it back the way it was when it's over. The trucks are boring as hell but I think it does give dirt track racing some great and much needed exposure. I'd rather watch grass grow but compared to what a lot of the NAPCAR people are used to, it's light years better than that garbage so hopefully it has and will continue to turn new people on to our sport. But still, it'd be great to have the track the way it used to be because it was a lot better.

I went to Eldora a couple years ago and after two heat races I was wondering what the big deal was.   I'd never go to Daytona or Talladega but  I imagined at the time that this is probably very similar.

How long ago did he change the track?

Volusia is faster.  Eldora could be but they have turned into a NASCAR track.  Hey Tony please fire Roger Slack he's ruining your race track.

Was  the old bigger version of Golden Isles even faster than both of them?  Never was there but I seem to remember that the street stocks were running 140 on the straights.  Just curious.

I was talking to Larry Boos from Eldora about our product that can keep the track the same. We could have done a survey of the track before he changed it and stored it in our 3D model computer program. We also could have outfitted a motorgrader with a robotic total station 3D automatic blade control system, which would grade the track back to it's original configuration. Then when they changed the grade for the trucks, we could design a new 3D model for that track configuration and automatically grade it for the trucks, then go back to the original 3D model to grade the track back to original configuration again! But Larry kinda choked on the price of the system.

I've never been to Volusia, but I've watched the racing from their online.

I don't dispute that Volusia is faster, as I'm sure it is.  But, I think that things happen faster at Eldora, if that makes any sense.  The speed at Eldora, combined with the banking and multiple grooves, creates a bowl that can eat up racecars in a heartbeat.

I know we all have the mindset that everything that happened in the past was better than it is today.  Sounds like lots of people have that feeling about Eldora.  But, if you were at the King's Royal last year and watched Christoper Bell come from deep in the field to challenge for the lead before getting eaten alive by the turn 4 wall, I'd say Eldora still has plenty to offer even after Tony "ruined" it.

One of the best Kings Royals I have ever seen! Several different leaders during the race, Bell's fantastic run from 14th, and 1st and 2nd place crossing the finish line side by side for the white flag!

I'd be very interested in seeing the details of something like this. I have college level training in engineering/cad design, so my interest is purely from an academic standpoint.

+1. Things happen at Eldora so fast because of all the things you list that its still a badass, fast track that's elbows up. Probably why Haud was so good there. You have to skirt that line with disaster sometimes and she can eat you alive. Volusia is unreal fast, but the racing is subpar. It's fast for fast sake if that makes sense, but I'll take Eldora.

Interesting stuff...my wife's an engineer so this would interest her as well and maybe bring her into the sport more...haha.

I should have mentioned our 3D computer program is called Business Center. Just search for it on Trimble's website, you used to be able to download it free for a 30 day trial, but I can't find it!
