I know this is going to be a hot Topic. But who do you think is the best? I say Karl Kinser.. He could put anybody in his car and win back in the day. I feel Ricky is just as good in this era. Tough call. What do you all think? One thing for sure they both had Knoxville figured out.

Hard to say, but when Warner has over 600 WOO wins and over 800 sprint car wins we can talk about it.

Might also add that Karl built a great amount of his engines.

Your going to be hard pressed to find anyone who knows anything about this sport that would argue against Karl Kinser. He won before and after Steve. Not only built but designed motors. Even when they were running Gaerte's he'd be in the garage porting the heads another 20 thousanths. Also came out with one of the first lightweight sprint cars.

Clearly Karl, both Steve and Mark had their best years by far in his cars. Mark especially had unbelievable years in the 5m and wasn't even close to dominant in other cars.

Less rules to break in the roll your own traction control years... Since Karl didn't grow up on posse soil... He gets the nod in this forum.

Karl IMO, won many, many races with Dick Gaines (before he got hurt) including the Knoxville Nationals, then hired Steve and won a TON and multiple Knoxville Nationals and WoO titles, then when Steve left for NASCAR Mark won multiple WoO titles, multiple Knoxville Nationals and multiple races.
IMO, if he came back today he'd make anyone an immediate contender (maybe not an immediate champion, but contender right away) even though he's been away for 10+ years.

Hard to say, Karls era was one of innovation where you built your own parts. I believe Rickys era is more
focused on detail to set up. Not saying Karl couldnt set up a car or Ricky couldnt create parts
but his hands are tied more than Karls.

Neither one in my opinion. Davey Brown Sr. is the man Over 1000 win.

This garbage again. Karl and steve did amazing things BUT they also had the best motors by a landslide and yes karl was a machineist and chassis wizard. Hard to compare ricky and donny when they buy parts off the shelf. And don't give me any Shaver garbage either!!! Glad I got to talk to and watch all of them !!!

Neither...... I would say Sammy
I love a quote by Karl Kinser in open wheel along time ago that went something along the lines of
"If all the drivers had to wrench and then drive then Sammy would rarely lose a race"
Karl said this not me but it's true

Don't lump Karl in with the modern day parts changers.

After Mark and Sammy wrecked at the Nationals in 97 and they were done with their finger pointing and whining, Sammy told Karl "If you and I teamed up, we'd never lose a race!" In one quote, Sammy praised Karl and dismissed Mark and Steve. Mark was not happy but Karl thought it was quite a compliment.

There have been many great ones in the history of Sprint Car racing.......but only ONE Karl Kinser. I still can not believe he just woke up one day and basically walked away from the sport and never looked back?

He didn't walk away from the sport, The sport walked away from him. Please tell me what else he had to prove?
If there were more challenges to be had. He may have stayed. From what I understand, he had cars ready to go for at least a couple years after. But it would have taken a wadd of cash up front, rather than what they might win in return.
After winning everything with at least three drivers. It's probably more challenging to him to bring a old hotrod back to life.

Can't we just say they are both the best in their respective eras? Two eras where things were vastly different. Same argument in other sports. Is Crosby better than Gretzky, etc., etc. Both generational talents that are the best in their eras. If you were able to experience both Karl and Ricky consider yourself lucky. Same as if you were able to experience Steve Kinser at his height and Schatz right now.

Obvious answer, but less fun to argue!
