He had the most distinctive voice in all of racing and the guy had a memory like no other before or after him.  He was an Army clerk in the states after getting drafted during WWII (the big one).  Then a big push to get tens and tens of thousands of troops to Europe as soon as possible.  He found out his MOS was changed to Riflemen when arriving in either France or Germany, not sure which but he knew how the files were kept and went in to his own file and changed his MOS (military occupations skill) back to Clerk.  I don't know why he would put something like that in his book.  Veterans reading that paragraph are no doubt as stunned as I was.  Couldn't believe it.  I won't say what that sounds like but the bulk of our soldiers carried guns into battle, not a typewriter.

And then to brag about his blackmarket skills, making $60,000 in military currency while in Europe but only able to send home $20,000 of it before the military currency became useless and then the paper was only good for making fires.

Lawlessness and liberalism equals Hell. NY City,
Detroit, Seattle, Chicago, Minnepolis, etc. We saw it.
Burning hundreds of buildings, a thousand assaults and
dozens of murders. Getting worser and worser.

Economaki obviously was able to serve his country much better as a clerk than a rifle man.   He only corrected the military brass mistake IMHO.   As far as the rest.....minor compared to what others got away with and how much the Gov't wasted/stole/embezzeled.

Smokey Yunick told a similar story (and worse) in his autobio.
