Stockton’s Brad Furr races to an entertaining Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo victory on Friday night

By Gary Thomas

Watsonville, CA – June 19, 2016…Former Ocean Sprints champion Brad Furr of Stockton held off a furious late race charge from Salinas driver Jeremy Chisum to make his way back to Ocean Speedway victory lane for the first time in over a year on Friday night.

Furr was able to extend his current point lead in the Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo standings by way of his first win since April of last year. The former World of Outlaws regular is in search of his second career track title at the Watsonville based quarter-mile this season.

“It feels great to get a win tonight and I really can’t thank my guys enough,” commented the driver of the Price Rite Restaurant Equipment/ Brad Furr Racing No. 2 mount. “We’ve definitely been getting stronger as the weeks have gone on and that’s definitely what you want to do. Thank you to all the fans that came out tonight and we’ll see you next time.”

The 30-lap feature started out as a battle between young upstart Logan Seavey of Sutter and veteran Kurt Nelson from Gilroy. Seavey, driving for the Shaw family, captured the dash and took the lead at the waving of the green flag. A well prepared surface was presented to competitors, which saw Seavey & Nelson swap the lead multiple times early on in the race while navigating through traffic. Heartbreak city would strike Nelson though, as he slowed with issues while leading the race on lap 10 to bring out a yellow.

This moved Seavey up to the top spot and he would hold command until lap 17 when Furr was able to rocket into the lead. Some of the best racing seen all season long then took place with positions changing regularly throughout the field. The battle for second through fifth was an intense one that kept the crowd entertained over the final half of the contest. Jeremy Chisum moved into second on lap 21 and methodically closed the gap between himself and Furr.

With the white flag in the air Chisum rapidly closed and at the checkered missed out on his first career win by about a car length. It was a fantastic night for Chisum, who celebrated his birthday by scoring his second consecutive podium finish. “I’m so excited I don’t even know what to say right now,” he commented. “To finish second to a guy like Brad Furr is pretty special. I used to play him on the World of Outlaws video game. Thank you to everyone that supports our team and everybody that helps us out.”

Coarsegold’s Scott Parker had a great night and earned his first career Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo podium. “It’s a great feeling to be standing up here tonight. We’ve really been working hard on this car and it has definitely paid off. Big thanks to my dad and our entire team. We always love racing at Ocean Speedway.”

Hanford’s Collin Markle and Fresno’s Koen Shaw rounded out the top-five. Both drivers should be commended for excellent drives in the feature. Last week’s winner Tommy Tarlton came home sixth after starting dead last due to not getting a qualifying time. Seavey ended the race in seventh after his front nose wing became askew. It was still a very impressive Ocean Speedway debut for the Outlaw Kart graduate. The remainder of the top-10 was filled by Penngrove’s Buddy Kofoid, Fremont’s Dustin Golobic and Lemoore’s Cole Macedo.

The Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo will have a couple weekends off before returning to action on Friday July 8 for round seven in the fight for the track title. This coming Friday June 24 will mark the first visit of the season by the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series to Ocean Speedway. The night of racing pays tribute to the late Al Pombo & Marshall Sargent in the 31st annual Pombo/Sargent Classic. More info as well as pre-sale tickets can be found on our website www.racepmg.com
