CANYON SPEEDWAY HOSTS “5TH ANNUAL SALUTE TO INDY” THIS SATURDAY & SUNDAY
By Lance Jennings

MAY 25, 2016... This Saturday and Sunday, May 28th & 29th, the USAC SouthWest Sprint Cars will invade Peoria’s Canyon Speedway for the “5th Annual Salute to Indy.” Promoted by Kevin Montgomery, both nights will also feature Napa Non Wing Sprint Cars, Scottsdale Muffler & Automotive Presents IMCA Hobby Stocks vs Renegades, Western ModLites, and Mini Sprints. The Front Gates will open at 5:00pm with Racing scheduled to begin at 7:00pm. For more event and ticket information, visit www.canyonspeedwaypark.com or call 602.258.RACE (7223).

The "Salute to Indy" has been an Arizona tradition going back to the days of the legendary Manzanita Speedway. In 1991, Ricky Johnson won the inaugural race and also scored victories in 1992 and 1995. In 2012, Canyon Speedway revived the event and California’s Colby Copeland earned the win. Since then, Ricky’s son R.J. has dominated the race by taking the last three checkered flags.

Since January 26, 2013, Canyon Speedway has hosted forty-six USAC SouthWest Sprint Car events. 3-time champion R.J. Johnson leads all drivers with twelve “home track” victories followed by Bryan Clauson (8), Ryan Bernal (4), and Stevie Sussex (4). This year, Clauson (3), Josh Hodges (2), and Stevie Sussex (1) have earned wins at Canyon, while rain washed out the April 30th show. A complete series win list at Canyon is at the end of this release.

Entering the sixth point race, Stevie Sussex (Tempe, Arizona) has a 30-point lead over the competition. Racing Mike Burkhart’s #21AZ Stratis Construction / Westin Diversified RSS, Sussex earned his third win of the season at Queen Creek on May 7th. To date, the hard charger has also posted three heat race victories, one top-qualifier award, one hard charger award, six top-10 finishes, and 60 feature laps led to his credit. Stevie ranks fourth in series wins and will be looking to sweep the “Salute to Indy.”

R.J. Johnson (Tempe, Arizona) is second in the chase for the championship. Driving Bill Michael’s #77M Kodiak Products / Beal’s Auto Body Sherman, Johnson led five laps at Queen Creek before finishing second. Heading to Canyon, the three-time champion has one feature win, three heat race victories, three top-qualifier awards, ten top-10 finishes, and 39 feature laps led. This weekend, R.J. will have his sights on claiming his fifth “Salute to Indy” triumph.

“Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. (Buckeye, Arizona) ranks third in the point standings. Piloting the Massey Motorsports’ #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply RSS, Davis ran third at Arizona Speedway. To date, the five-time Arizona champion has six heat race victories, one top-qualifier award, one hard charger award, ten top-10 finishes, and 34 feature laps led. “Chargin” Charles is second on the SouthWest win list with 13 features and will be looking to win his fourth “Salute to Indy.”

“The Magic Man” Mike Martin (Yuma, Arizona) sits fourth in the championship point chase. Racing his #16 Sherwin-Williams / Boulevard Truck Maxim, Martin claimed seventh at Queen Creek. Heading to Canyon, the former Hall of Fame Classic winner has three heat race victories, one hard charger award, eight top-10 finishes, and 27 feature laps led on the year. “The Magic Man” is tied for fifth on the win list and will have his sights on winning both nights at Canyon Speedway.

After running fourth at Queen Creek, Matt Rossi (Glendale, Arizona) has climbed to fifth in the USAC SouthWest points. Driving the family owned #02 Apache Scapes / IWR Spike, Rossi has three top-10 finishes and 1 feature lap led to his credit. The former 360 Western World Champion will be looking to add the “Salute to Indy” to his win list.

Among the other drivers expected to be in action are Josh Pelkey, Nick Aiuto, Dennis Gile, Chris Bonneau, “The Bull” Tye Mihocko, Andy Reinbold, Brian Hosford, Tom Ogle, Dustin Burkhart, Landon Cling, Michael Curtis, Shon Deskins, Asa Kesterson, and more.
